The building is currently abandoned. As a work of authorship, the objective goes beyond simple re-functionalization and is, first and foremost, about social re-appropriation. The architectural gesture expresses here its intent to care: a new roof. A roof that protects - the artistic artifact - that transforms the image - the contemporary building - that brings more light - the youth. Is it possible to cover a building and give it more light? Selected light is often more powerful and evocative than diffuse light. Like a window onto the landscape, it allows for the emphasis of specific highlights, framing them and enhancing their poetic resonance. The composition of solids and voids in the new roof echoes the existing modules and is articulated in three functional typologies: private terraces, skylights, and voids that allow air to pass through. These last ones cast onto the sand the shapes of the modules from which the former summer camp building was composed, creating an immaterial and dynamic echo. This more perceptual and less physical approach is also applied in the choice of material for the new covering: glazed ceramic, which - thanks to its faceted and glossy surface - reflects the colors of what it “sees”: the sand, the sky, De Carlo’s cement tiles. The existing structure will be restored and preserved, including its spatial articulations. Only two interventions are planned: the replacement, on the top floor, of some opaque ceiling modules with glass; and the construction of a new lantern-like volume above the area originally designated for the supervisors. This, in contrast, now stands out as a transparent volume for collective initiatives, reaching up to meet the new roof - and in particular, the events terrace, conceived as a social space that adds panorama without taking ground.
