Inujima, Japan – Cultural
Inujima is a tiny island in the Setouchi inland sea. Once flourishing with copper refining and stone quarrying, the island had a population of 5000 people, which however started to shrink after the decline of the industries, reaching just 50 islanders. From 2010 important Japanese architects have started to imagine and design its renewal: the vocation of Inujima becomes the art, and its dialogue with nature. This project continues the process under development, selecting three strategic places for the intervention: the north coast-line - now inaccessible - the middle garden - under development but not well connected - and the south beach - degraded but with exceptional landscape. A floating path connects the village to the garden through the north coast providing resting spaces... The path reaches a point in between the hills where a pavilion fits into, to provide a special view north-south... The path continues in the middle garden where two big canopies provide indoor and outdoor spaces for gathering... Finally a small natural amphitheatre takes place in the south coast where also two existing industrial sheds have been renovated to host art ateliers and events.
